First of all, do not poke, prod or squeeze it yourself , you may spread the infection. See your physician who will decide if it needs to be drained and can do it properly under sterile conditions. Even if it does not need drained, if it is indeed infected, you may need antibiotics. See your Doctor.

Abcess means infection and infection means trouble. Try soaking your foot in salt water as hot as you can stand it. The heat will draw the infection to the surface and the salt water will initialize healing. If the area becomes red and hot, seek the help of a healthcare professional. You may need an antibiotic.

In most cases where an ingrown toenail has resulted in a toenail abscesss, surgery is required. However, keeping the area clean and putting ointment on it may cure it.

You will most likely have to have the abscess drained by a surgeon. If you let it go, it may just keep growing and the pain will get worse. You will experience a lot of discomfort especially because it is in the foot and wearing shoes may become a problem.
