First, make sure the kids have passports and up to date medical records. Next is timing. While a trip to Italy is educational, you don't want to interfere with school. What do you want to get out of the trip? Planning is key-visit some web sites, get some guide books out of the library.

Consider their ages and attention span. Little babies are not going to be engaged in their environment, while older children will be. It might be worth leaving infants with grandma.

Things to consider: there's the over all cost of the trip. How many people are going? Consider the hassles of just getting out of the country. Ie: passports.
