What other size tires can I put on my stock 17in 15spoke 2004 Volkswagen gti rims if the stock size is 225/45/17?

You can put any size tires on but the width has to be less than 1" wider than width of the rim. The "biggest" should be a 245/35/17. If you go bigger bad things are going to happen. ALso the wider the tire the lower the aspect ratio to keep it from hitting.

Since your tire was a 17 inch diameter one with a width of 225mm then anything similar should fit. Just make sure it is 17 inches. It can be wider if you have clearance and it can be a higher profile(+45) if you have a deep enough wheel well. Just measure carefully.
