It's a completely harmless condition, where your tongue looks like a map. It is not contagious, but can probably be inherited genetically. What happens is that the papillae on your tongue disappear from some areas and get overcrowded in other. The condition often gets worse when you eat certain types of food or if you are pregnant.

A geographical tongue is a chronic medical condition in which the tongue has several regions of the taste buds discolored, and sometimes (painless) cracks scattered around it. Its cause is still uncertain.
