The number of washes it takes for the dye to fade is how they determine if it's "temporary" "permanent" or "semi-permanent". Temporary stuff washes out with just a few washings, permanent stuff takes a lot, semi seems to wear off in a few weeks for me.

The semi-permanent hair dye differs from the permanent. The semi allows the color to coat the shaft and wears away, not permeating the hair shaft.

Semi permanent hair dye doesn't penetrate the hair shaft like permanent hair dye does.Semi permanent hair dye washes away faster because of smaller dye molecules and lack of certain chemicals.

There are three levels of hair dye (over the counter) 1 washes out fast, one or two washes(depending on your hair color) 2 is semi-permanent. It doesn't completely penetrate the shaft of the hair so it will wash out or fade away, eventually. Level three is permanent and will not wash out.

Semi-permanent hair dye does not fully penetrate the hair shaft, and so it does not remain in the hair as long as permanent dye. Semi-permanent dye also lacks certain chemicals found in permanent dye, so it may be safer for your hair.

Semi-permanent hair dye is a hair dye that only stays in the hair for an average of 4 - 6 weeks. This is because the dye does not penetrate the hair cuticle, but rather "stains" it.

The difference between regular hair dye and semi-permanent hair dye is the amount of time the dye remains in your hair. With permanent hair dye the dye stays in until your hair grows out. With semi-permanent hair dye the dye will usually wash out after a period of time. Read the box for how long it will stay in.

A semi-permanent dye will color hair through multiple washings, but eventually washes out. It contains smaller dye molecules than temporary dye, which allows the color to soak into the hair shaft somewhat. It also does not contain ammonia, a chemical which helps permanent dyes to sink deeper into the hair shaft.

Semi permanent hair die is a mix between a temp dye and a permanent. Temp did creates a film over the hair while permanent changes the hair itself. Semi permanent mixes the two to create a longer lasting film that will fade back into normal hair color.

The hair dye stays in for a while but eventually fades. Permanent hair dye stays and has to be grown out or redyed.
