Blood vessels usually burst due to an injury, such as an impact, like a bruise. They can also burst due to high blood pressure, though this is rare. They may also burst when there is a weakness in the blood vessel, such as during an aneurysm, which is fatal in the brain.

Anything that causes trauma to the blood vessel, either internally or externally, can cause a burst blood vessel. An external trauma could be something like a bump or hit, leaving a bruise. An internal trauma is a sudden increase in pressure - your eyes can be particularly susceptible to this during prolonged vomiting or straining.

Blood vessels burst because of an existing congenital anomaly which make them weak like strawberry aneurysm. They burst because of high blood pressure or hypertension which weakens the lining of the walls of blood vessels.
