Dresses make good mother daughter outfits. Some companies such as Cinnamon girl make children sizes as well as adult sizes so a mother and daughter can easily have matching outfits. Mother and daughter can also match by using the same shirts, or same colors such as denim jeans with a white top.

Simple dresses are always a good choice such as aline skirts and sundresses. Nothing with ruffles unless you yourself enjoy looking like Shirley Temple the last part of her career. Also stick with more solid than prints. As print appropriateness often varies depending upon age.
