What kinds of things indicate an alternator or battery problem?

There are places like auto part stores to test these parts for you free of charge. There is no real way to indicate, unless your vehicle is not starting.

An alternator or battery problem can be noticed if the vehicle takes longer to start, or does not start at all. If the alternator is not working, it means it is not charging the battery. Use a voltmeter to check the batter. Many places, including auto parts stores offer free check ups for both the battery and alternator.

If when you turn your lights on, other things stop working or when your lights are on and then you turn on the radio, the lights dim.

Dim lights when turning on accessory is a sign of a bad alternator. A bad battery will make a car crank slow of not start at all.
