Traditionally Maori have followed the religion of their region, believing that all objects, animate or inanimate have a spiritual essence called mana and deities were responsible for natural forces, environments (such as forest or ocean) or groups of animals (such as birds or fish). Today, Islam and Christianity have spread throughout the Maori culture.
