The kind of hornet that lives in the dirt is called the Dirt Dobber. They are somewhat bigger than the regular hornet. They usally don't live in the ground either. They take mud from the ground and cary it by mouth to the spot where they want to make the nest. The nest is made of dirt.

Hornets, of the wasp family, generally nest in dark, sheltered places above ground, like the hollow trunk of a tree. Yellowjackets, also members of the wasp family, nest in the ground. Stepping on a yellowjacket nest can be dangerous, as some nests in warm climates can be huge, expelling many angry, stinging insects.

Mud dauber wasps live in hole they burrow in the ground. Fortunately this species of wasp isn't a social wasp so you don't have an infestation on your hands, though they can be dangerous. Their life span is also not very long. Eliminate this nest and you shouldn't have this problem again.
