What is your experience with Kumon Learning Centers?

My son's teacher recommends them but I don't know anybody who has gone there.

I had two children in grade school. Many parents there were sending their kids to Kumon Learning Center. It seemed that the Center did a lot of rote learning, both by what the parents said and seeing some of the worksheets. One teacher at the school recommended that children NOT go to Kumon, as it was not a developmental approach.

Most of the teachers are part-time. There are a number of similar centers out there. They are generally franchised. Ownership especially in this economy has turned over frequently.

It's different from other companies because the child is not being tutored by the center but by the parent. The center determines the child's current reading and math levels, builds a plan to increase those levels and provides you with specific workbooks. Finding the right workbooks is wonderful because my child is progressing, but the fees are very high.

I have not had any direct experience with Kumon but you might try asking the teachers at your local school. You could also ask at the education faculty of your local college or university.
