High potassium could be caused by kidney failure or diseases such as Addisons or Type 1 Diabetes. Could also be caused by excessive use of potassium supplements. For long term treatment, I would suggest taking Loop Diurectics to limit potassium in the body.

First, if the level is higher than 6.0 mEq/L, your doctor should treat you. Call him/her immediately if this is the case. That would be a dangerous condition. Causes of high potassium could be: kidney failure, Addison's disease, Type 1 diabetes, heavy drug or alcohol use and destruction of red blood cells because of injury or burn.

High potassium is a sign of a kidney problem. It can lead to muscle, nerve, and heart dysfunction. You should discontinue any supplements, see your doctor, and drink more water.

there are several types of doctor prescribed medications that can cause high potassium levels. Just discontinue use to return to normal. If that is not the case, kidney failure can cause a rise in potassium levels. Diabetes is a common factor in kidney failure.
