One of the prominent themes that I extracted from Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka was the importance of self-empowerment, in that the young man had lived in ways that were so self-sacrificial that he failed to recognize, which ultimately led to his death.

Obviously it's not to be taken literally. It's one way of interpreting how we are changed by society and the world we live in.

"Metamorphosis"' underynderlying is in its name. As one person thinks they understand the symbolism of Kafka's Gregor turning into a cockroach, another idea shifts the first into a different one.
