Hair stylists make $2 - $5 per hour base pay and receive additional tips based on service. In other salons, the stylist charges for the hair she cuts and pays a percentage to the salon owner OR rents her station from the salon owner.

Most hair stylists rent their booths from a salon. They will typically pay a set fee to work at that station and in return keep the majority of their earnings. A good hair stylist can make $20-30,000 a year in a decent area, more so if they work at a high end salon.

Never choose a profession based on pay; do what you love and the money, as they say, will follow. Income would depend on the salon, location (in the US), ability to build a steady clientele, talent, expertise, and the arrangements made with the salon. Salon owners stand to make the most, but have the most risk and responsibility.
