The therapy is going to consist of a lot of leg exercises. They will have to build up the muscle around the kneecap after surgery.

Raising the ankle and flexing it like you're stepping on a gas pedal helps prevent blood clots. Elevating the leg above heart level will keep the swelling down, and raising the leg up to a foot off the bed while it's straightened is also an early exercise. Later therapy will focus on strengthening the leg muscles.

Post surgery, physical therapy focuses on bending and stretching exercises, as well as certain exercises to ensure balance. There are also strengthening exercises. All of these are to return the knee's range of motion and build strength in the surrounding muscles.

Patella, or knee, surgery is generally followed by physical therapy for a number of weeks determined by a doctor. This varies depending upon the severity of the injury.
