It is a study of African-American identity and how different people respond to it. In particular different attitudes to identity within the Johnson family are portrayed. Coming to terms with tradition and learning to respect ones ancestors are part of the growth of the main characters as well as a respect for others and what is important to them.

The main theme involves connections of the characters to their roots. Dee changes her name and appearance and cultivates new mannerisms to prove that she is African even though her family has been in the US for many generations. Maggie and Mrs. Johnson rely on family memories to define their heritage and are confused by Dee's behavior.

The theme is different ways to be proud of your heritage. It's one of Alice Walker's best short stories. She wrote it early in her career, and it has the quilting theme in it that she has used in much of her later work. The mother in the story reaffirms her right to be proud.

This story is about Mrs. Johnson(Mama), a strong Black woman living in the deep South with two daughters. It illustrates the differences between the two daughters. This story pays homage to Alice's ancestors from there who were sharecroppers, and teaches you to stand up for what you believe and for your rights. She based both sisters on aspects of herself.
