Amoeba is a scientific name. It is the genus name of the little one celed animal with the false feet called "pseudopods". I believe that naked rhysopods and other types of protozoans are along the lines of amoebae. I think that many one celled animals in water or soil fall into this catagory.

The Ameoba is itself a genus in the Amoebidae family, and includes many species. However, the general term "amoeba" is commonly used for all organisms in the family Amoebozoa.
