Canis Lupus Familiaris or Canis Familiaris or Canis Familiaris Domesticus-- depending on who you listen to. This can get a bit political. For biologists, the breed is seen as an artificial type that is maintained by kennel clubs. However, recent advances in DNA-testing of dogs is adding some surprising support for kennel club designations.

Dogs are canines. That is their family. Breed fits in towards the end of the scientific classification process after species, I think. Same species breed mostly and, I believe that since species show characteristics, breeds are made by mixing different charactistics of dog and getting them recognized and listed in new breed classifications.
