Biomass is living and recently dead animals as well as plant matter and animal waste that can be used for fuel. Most commonly plant matter used for energy and or heat. Biomass is also mainly carbon based material. Biomass is derived from three different things, wood, waste, and alcohol fuels

In the field of ecology, it is the total mass of all the living organisms within a certain ecosystem at one time. It is often measured as mass per area, but it can also be total mass for a given system. Definitions differ slightly between fields, but this is the general idea.
