To keep from getting too cold you should dress in layered clothing. Prevent back injury by not overloading your shovel and bend with your knees. To prevent slipping I found that if you put a pair of old socks OVER your boots you will have better traction.

Wearing duck or goose jackets or jumpers are very useful. It keeps you very warm not only when you are shoveling snow but when it is cold. Wearing hiking shoes help a lot from preventing you from slipping. They have specially designed plates at the bottom of the shoe that prevents you from slipping.

First, get an ergonomic shovel--one of the ones with a bent handle, which encourages you to push the snow rather than throw it, easing strain on your back. Dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes. When actually shoveling, if you must "throw" the snow, bend your knees while picking up the snow, turn, and sump the shovel, rather than tossing.

The proper clothes are important. Gloves, a hat, coat with a hood, long pants, a sweater and boots will keep you warm and from slipping. Don't fill the whole shovel to overflowing and lift with your knees, this should help your back. Remember to take breaks and if you feel yourself getting exhausted, stop for the day.
