It is the Kentucky Derby thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old horses that takes place each year at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The winning horse gets a blanket made of roses draped over his or her neck and is in the running for the Triple Crown, which means winning the next two races, the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

I'm not sure about Pasadena, but I do know that the Run for the Roses is a slang term referring to the Kentucky Derby.
