Sorbitol sometimes known as glucitol is a slow-metabolizing sugar alcohol derived from many different fruits. While it is only 60% sweet as sugar it is used in many foods. When ingested, it can have laxative affect. Sorbitol can cause diarrhea, bloating and gas unless it's consumed in small quantities. It may also cause abdominal pain in some people.
