What is the relationship between hormones and acne?

It's logical that there's some relationship, since acne shows up when you're most hormonal.

Hormones spike during puberty which is one of the periods in your life when acne is most bothersome. Also, when stress hormones spike inflammation can get much worse due to the stress hormones. Inflammation is one of the factors in acne as acne is essentially a low grade localized infection with fairly profound inflammation. Less stress will decrease acne.

Male hormones (everybody has them) increase the amount of sebum in your skin. Sebum that accumulates in pores is an essential ingredient in acne.

The more hormones, estrogen and/or testosterone, the more body will create more oil. Acne results from the build up of the oil on the skin that forms into a pimple.
