You are right, It is cruel. There really is no logical reason to do it but it is still done. If you get your bird something to scrape its beak on it wont need such barbaric procedures.

The reason for it is because beaks are like nails, they never stop growing. If their beak gets too long they will be unable to eat.

So using a nail clippers and emery board should be ok. I am thinking taking a little off might encourge her to file the rest down herself.  add a comment

All lovebirds beak are not trimmed. Birds whose beak is over grown is trimmed inorder to keep the bird healthy and for our safety.

If the bird's beak is normal, you shouldn't trim it. You should only trim the bird's beak if it's overgrown. An overgrown beak can keep a bird from eating.

Lovebird in a flight cage. One female has a thin extention of beak. Approx 1/32" growing around and back under. I think the male has been feeding her. I feed fresh veggies& cuddle bone, gravel, & seed.Plenty to naw on. Can I cliip some &use a emery board to file?

She broke it off trying to bite me. I filed it lightly with a emery board. The piece that broke off was more transparent like a finger nail extention.  add a comment
