car repairs

Question by  Pickles (49)

What is the purpose of the resonator?

I was told that it really has no valuable function on a car and if it goes bad I do not need to fix it.

The resonator sits between the catalytic converter and the muffler. It's function is to help dampen the sounds waves produced by the engine. It is not required for the car to run, but it will make riding in the car tolerable to your ears.

A resonator is a type of muffler. It normally is placed in front of the muffler. It is designed to muffle some of the noise of the engine. You probably don't need it on your car, but taking it away will make the car a little louder.

A resonator is part of the exhaust system. It works with the muffler to change the noise of the exhaust. In most cars it is to reduce the noise but in some cars it is to make the exhaust deeper and throatier. There's no real need to replace it unless the noise bothers you.

It functions similar to a muffler only it doesn't reduce noise as much. It gives the exhaust a deeper "mellow" tone. If it leaks it should be replaced but removal will make you vehicle sound different. It will be louder and possibly more harsh sounding. Upgrading to a better muffler should help also.

I have never heard of a car resonator before today so I called my grandfather, a life long devoted mechanic. A car resonator is located in the exhaust system and helps make the car sound quieter. So a bad resonator just makes your car sound like it has no muffler.

The purpose of the resonator in the exhaust system is to remove unwanted sound from the exhaust note. Removing it will not affect the cars running noticeably but will affect the way the car sounds. It's not required but you may not like how it sounds without it.

the resonator is just to make the exhaust even quieter, you really dont need to repair or replace it. The car will probably have a little more horse pwer with out it in the exhaust system. Just remove the resonator and use exhaust pipe to replace the missing gap and weld it in place and your ready to go

The main purpose of the resonator within the exhaust system is to improve the exhaust sound. It can eliminate harsher frequency found in the exhaust. It allows the sound to resonate or reflect on itself mellowing it out. It is not essential to one in he system but removal will affect the exhaust note.
