What is the purpose of the mucous plug?

My doctor talks about it but I don't know what it's for.

The mucous plug is in the cervix, and prevents bacteria and other harmful factors in the environment from entering the uterus. The mucous plug starts to fall out as the cervix dilates prior to labor. Some women lose it during active labor, and some women start to lose it a couple weeks beforehand.
