Hydroxyz HCL, hydroxyzine hydrochloride is primarily an antihistamine drug that is used to treat allergic reactions. In addition to this, it is prescribed for anxiety and tension. It is also used to treat allergic skin reactions such as hives or contact dermatitis. It acts by reducing the CNS activity and the main side effect of the drug is drowsiness.

Hydroxyz is known as hydroxyzine and has two uses. Its first use is as an antihistamine, which is good for treating allergies. However, it has a powerful side effect - sedation. This is also used as a second use; this medication can be used as an anxiolytic (relieves anxiety and relaxes) and may cause drowsiness.

Hydroxyz, or hydroxyzine, is the generic form of Vistaril and Atarax. It is a strong antihistamine, think industrial strength benadryl. It is prescribed for the same uses that you would take the over the counter Benadryl for. Like runny nose, allergies, or itching. Like benadryl to also has sedative effect, but stronger. So, is also prescribed for insomnia and anxiety.
