An acid base indicator will change colors in the presence of various pH's which rise and fall when acid or base are added to a solution. Some only change color in acid, some only change in base but it is a visual way to tell when a solution has reached a certain point in the experiment.

An acid base indicator is needed to determine whether a substance may be acidic or basic or neutral. Knowing this information will help a scientist complete other experiments in which the ph of the substance must be known.
