There are different color wires in a switch and the purpose is so that you know how to wire the switch with the right wire in the right place. The red wire is the hot wire and makes the switch turn on.

Its usually the positive current of the switch. It works to create the loop from the switch to open the flow of electricity to the light fixture or socket. Without it you won't be able finish the flow which would render your light and sockets inoperable. Just don't cut it out.

It would generally be the power cable that in the case of a 240 volt mains circuit would connect to the positive. I would leave this alone unless you need to touch it and if you do touch it make sure that the supply is turned off at the box.
