A quinceanera is a celebration that marks a Mexican or a Latin American's becoming of age at the age of 15.It is similar to a Bat Mitzvah which is also a celebration that celebrates a girls becoming of age but in Bat Mitzvah the girl is 12 years old.

It's a Mexican (or maybe all Latin American) celebration of a girl's 15th birthday if I remember correctly. Kind of like a cross between an American's Sweet 16 party and a church Confirmation, it's something of a "coming of age" thing with both religious ritual and social celebration. I'd read up on it if invited to the party.

The word "Quinceanera" comes from Spanish for 15 years. In Hispanic cultures, families throw a party to mark the coming of age of their daughter. Gifts are usually given.
