It is a part of human nature to want/desire things that we cannot have. There is also an innate desire to be loved and wanted. This girl fills both reasons.

It is because he feels that they are filling a void in his life that he can not fill on his own.

The reason they do so is due to mental illness. The person with the crush will fabricate situations which did not occur and express a deep connection which is one sided. The person usually suffers from a personality disorder such as border line or worse.
