Question by  CW11 (29)

What is the proper aglaonema care?

I was recently given an aglaonema or Chinese Evergreen, and am concerned that I will just kill it.

The Aglaonema should be planted indoors as the constant temperature year round is conducive for healthy growth of the plant. Although the plant needs to be watered well, make sure that it is never left standing in soggy soil. Check once a week to see if it needs watering.

They prefer low light situations, so a north window location is ideal. Direct sunlight will hurt it. They also like consistent watering, so do it at consistent time intervals, leaving the soil moderately moist but not soaking. You should not let it dry out either.

They are very tolerant. Use a moisture control potting soil. Need a constant temperature. Medium to low light. Likes a high humidity, but can adapt.

These plants are for indoor growing. They do not live well outside. Water them well, and water again will soil is dry. Best in a vermiculite or sand type soil for easy drainage. Have a pot big enough for root expansion. Place in indirect sunlight.

Aglaonema's are fantastic house plants due to the fact that they require minimal care. They are very happy in low light situations and also need very little water. Remove flowers.

The best way to do it is to give them plenty of light and water and leave a radio playing low on easy listening near them.

The Chinese Evergreen (aglaonema) is a fairly hardy houseplant. You are most likely to kill it by giving it too much attention. The plant will thrive with good, diffuse light, with little or no direct sunlight. You should water your Chinese Evergreen sparingly; overwatering tends to kill them quickly. Water only when the soil has been dry for several days.

Make sure they do not have direct sunlight throughout the day, and keep the soil moist but don't let them stand in water. They don't tolerate cold, but indoor temperatures are fine for them. Keep them in a humid area during cold winter months to compensate for the drier air.
