Elevated AST levels may indicate liver damage from several different causes, including disease or injury. Physicians must review your entire medical history to determine what the elevated level means.

High levels of aminotransferase usually indicate liver damage due to different type of diseaes. But it can also indicate many other causes such as tumor, heart disease, lung damage, kidney damage or even inflammation of muscle tissue. So the prognosis depends upon the exact reason for elevated aminotransferase.

Aminotransferase are type of enzymes contained in liver cells. If there is any damage or injury to the liver, then the liver cells spill out this enzyme into blood stream thereby increasing its level in blood.

Elevated aminotransferase (exceeding 1000 IU/L or 50 time the upper limit of normal) is commonly associated with liver diseases. And liver cells when damaged can repair by itself without any medicines taken, this process is called regeneration. So the prognosis in people with liver disease is good.

The main and general cause for elevated ast is being an addict for alcohol. If a person continuously taking alcohol, he will be affected with an elevated AST. To find out it clearly, you have to undergo hepatitis screening test or an ultrasound test for liver or liver biopsy periodically.
