The chances of you having identical twins are 1 in 285 and fraternal twins are 1 and 43. Having twins can also be influenced by your race (multiples are more common in African Americans and least common in Hispanics and Asians). The chance of having twins increases with each pregnancy.

Twins make up 2% of the world's population. According to the National Vital Statistics Report for the USA, 32 out of every 1000 live births are twins. Many studies have documented that there is a slightly higher chance if twins run in your family (mother's side especially).

The odds of having twins, for someone who has not used fertility drugs, is about 1%. It has averaged 1 out of 80 births for the past few years, though that rate is pushed up by those using fertility drugs and treatments.

Faternal twins are considered to run in families, however it must be on the females side, it is when the female releases two eggs instead of one, you have a higher chance of faternal than identical. Identical twins are considered to be a fluke of nature.
