It is the ability to grasp small objects between the thumb and index finger. Most infants develop this ability between nine and twelve months of age, and it is a major milestone in fine motor skill development.

By 8-9 months, the baby uses the the thumb and the radial fingers are used to grasp objects. Finally, at 10-12 months the baby develops the fine pincer grasp, which is when the baby can pick up a small object between the distal thumb and index finger.

The pincer reflex is also called the pincer grasp. This develops in infants at about 9 months of age and enables them to pick up small objects.
