The origin is unclear. Some believe it originated in France and was based on the face of a clock. Hence, fifteen and thirty. Others believe it was based on a very similiar game that was played in France before the French revolution.

The reason that the tennis scoring system is so strange is that it originates from an almost entirely different game called real tennis. Where you got different amount of points for different plays.

It has medieval and French roots. Scoring system was based on a clock face at the end of the court. "Deuce" is derived from "deux". "Love" indicates "nothing".
