There are many different types of large black beetles. You define them more by where they are coming from. Beetles from the family of Passalidae are black and hard shelled and are often seen around rotting wood. Prioninae beetles may also fit this description but they tend to come from the ground. They like to live near roots.

It may be a species of the June bug/beetle. The dermestes lardarius is a house beetle that likes to hide in corners and underneath stuff.
