The most expensive rubies are bright-red in color and with few inclusions, and if there are inclusions, not visible to the naked eye. The cut of the ruby also factors into its price. The highest-ranked rubies come from Mogok, Burma. The highest price paid for a ruby was for Alan Caplan's "Mogok Ruby," a 16-carat stone for about $3 million.

Burmese rubies are the most expensive and rariest of all rubies, and most gemstones in general. This is because the mines have been closed to export

There is documentation of a ruby selling for close to $3,700,000! That's a lot of money! I believe it was an 8-carat cut ruby which equates the sale close to $425,000 per carat. This sale occurred back in 2006 in February of all months no less!
