graphite is a thin sheet of hexagonally connected carbon atoms. the loose ring structure of graphite makes it a good lubricant due to the sliding of the rings.

Graphite is a lot of carbon atoms that have come together in a specific manner. Graphite exists primarily in a planar hexagonal (alpha) lattice that is layered one on top of the other. Graphite that is rhombohedral (beta) is stacked slightly differently.
