Selah derives from calah which means 'to hang'. At those times to value something, it was suspended on a balance. From this context, Selah means that we should measure and reflect upon what has been said.

It is most seen in the Psalms of the Bible, where it is a musical notation of sorts. In that context the meaning most accepted is "pause and listen".
