Generally speaking, a "serious relationship" is one in which both parties agree not to date others. It often precedes an engagement or marriage. Sometimes the parties in a "serious relationship" live together. The term generally denotes exclusivity and the idea of permanence. Problems occur when one party thinks the relationship is serious and the other party doesn't.
