The DVD copyright law is that original works of authorship may not be recorded to a tangible medium. Meaning that audo and digital recordings may not be used.

It is illegal to buy a DVD with the intent of pirating it. Making copies of downloaded videos and copying to DVDs for sale is also illegal.

As far as the law is concerned, it's illegal to copy a DVD unless it is for backup. It's not heavily enforced.
