The minimum wage was started in the United States in the 1930s in response to the Great Depression. By mandating a minimum wage, the objective was to prevent wage deflation from high unemployment and ensure that everyone who worked earned enough money to support themselves and their families. The minimum wage has been raised along with inflation.

Minimum wage was started in 1938 by Franklin Rossevelt. The first laws were not for wages, but rather something like a labor board where employees could petition for higher wages. This was done mostly though a union. Miniumum wages are suppose to be set to give a family of 4 a comforatble living.
