They started in Germany in 1837 and came to America by the latter part of the same century with publication of Richard Outcault's The Yellow Kid.

Comic books, also called funny books, were introduced to America in 1934. In the Middle Ages, woodcutters devised parchment "broadsheets". Artists took advantage of the different executions with their pictures of burnings and hangings. Japan's comic books arrived in the 18th century; their woodblock-printed booklets were mostly folktales.
