Depending on the type of transmission, whether it be manual or automatic, there is a difference in the amount of transmission fluid required. With a manual A4LD transmission, 9-10 quarts of transmission fluid would be needed. With an A4LD automatic transmission, only 3 quarts of transmission fluid would be required. Both quantities are assumed the transmission fluid is empty.

The A4LD transmission has a fluid capacity of 9.5 quarts, or 9.0 liters. That's when it's completely dry--an oil change will require less than half of that!

The fluid capacity of a Ford transmission ranges from 12-14 in Owners Manuals. For example for ford E-250 the fluid capacity is 16 quarts. It means the fluid capacity varies.
