This defect is a type of spinal cord defect that occurs during pregnancy. For children with this diagnosis, this is luckily less eventful than the open type of dysraphism. For most patients, there will be little or no symptoms. There is a small chance of back pain, trouble with lower body movement, and bladder control.

Advances in neurosurgery have made the correction of these defects easier and less life threatening. Anytime there is an opening of any kind in the brain or spinal cord lining there is great chance for the introduction of anything foreign, such as bacteria or virus. Closing this quickly is essentially the best defense against those.

Early in fetal development, a Closed Spinal Dysraphism occurs from an imperfect closure of the neural tube. The defect is referred to as closed because skin covers the opening. Successful outcomes will come from aggressive surgery after birth. The surgery, sometimes called "untethering" may restore some function. Understanding the diagnosis early will help prepare for the birth.
