What is the difference in epinephrine and Novocaine?

Epinephrine is a vasoconstrictor which is often added to dental anesthetics to help control bleeding associated with dental procedures. It works by shrinking the blood vessels and decrasing the blood flow to the area. Novocaine is an anesthetic which is meant to "numb" the area so you won't feel discomfort during a dental procedure.

Epinephine is a component used along with Novocaine to numb the area quicker. It allows the novocaine to enter into the system faster and helps to numb the area longer.

Epinephrine is a vasoconstrictor and will keep you numb longer. Novovaine is used for a procedure that will not last long. You can not use Epinephrine if you have heart problems or if your doctor suggests that you take antibotics before you go to your dentist appointment. One keeps you numb longer thats all.

Novocaine and epinephrine are two different medications. Novocaine is an anesthetic. It works to numb the tissue and nerves so that you do not feel pain. Epinephrine works in conjunction with Novocaine by constricting the blood vessels. That in turn keeps the Novocaine in the affected area and allows it to do its job.
