The difference has to do with size. Asteroids are larger than meteors, but not big enough to be considered planets.

Asteroids are rocks in outer space. A meteor is a shooting star, it's the glowing trail of dust left in the sky when a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere.

Asteroids are large bodies that orbit the sun, but have no atmosphere. Meteors are any rock, iron, or ice mass that enters our atmosphere. So, if an asteroid were to eventually smack into Earth, it could then be considered a meteor as well, but not before then.
