Spermatogenesis is the process by which the male gamete, sperm, is formed. Oogenesis is the process by which the female gamete, ovum or egg, is formed. For both, it is a process of cell division and differentiation that results in the mature haploid gametes that fuse during sexual reproduction.

Spermatogenesis is the production of sperm, which oogenesis is the production of an egg. Sperm cells are produced throughout a males life time, though the amount may change. Egg cells are all produced before the female is born, and she has all the eggs she will ever have whens she is born.
