Oviparous refers to animals that lay eggs which mature and hatch externally. Viviparous are animals where the embryo develops inside the mother's body giving birth to a live young. Many aquatic animals have a combination which is called ovoviviparous where embryos develop inside the egg that's in the mother's body.
